Collagen eye masks: do they work?

Collagen in an under-eye mask works mainly as a hydrator. It helps the skin look smoother and plumper while the mask is on, and for a while after. It isn't a way to rebuild your own collagen, and we don't claim it is. For evening fine-line care, our purple mask pairs vegan collagen with bakuchiol, three peptides and hyaluronic acid, worn for 15 minutes, not overnight.

What collagen does in an under-eye mask
Collagen is a large protein, and in a mask it sits on the surface of the skin. There it holds water against the skin and leaves it feeling soft and cushioned. That's why you'll see skin look smoother and under-eyes look plumper after a mask. It's a hydration benefit, a pleasant one, but not a replacement for the collagen your skin makes itself.
So when you're choosing a collagen eye mask, look at what else is in it. The rest of the formula is where fine-line care comes from.
What's in our purple mask
The Age Defying Collagen Boost mask (purple) is made for the evening:
- Vegan collagen (made by yeast fermentation) for a plumper, firmer-looking under-eye.
- Bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol, for smoother-looking skin. It isn't a retinoid.
- Three peptides: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, for fine-line care.
- Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and allantoin for hydration and comfort.
It's fragrance-free, vegan and cruelty-free, and free from parabens, sulphates, drying alcohol, retinoids and mineral oil. 30 pairs in a jar for A$55.

How to use it in the evening
- Cleanse and pat your skin dry.
- Place one mask under each eye, below the lower lashes.
- Leave on for 15 minutes while you wind down.
- Peel off and pat in the leftover essence, then apply your night cream.
New to bakuchiol? Try a patch test first: a little essence on your inner arm or behind your ear, and wait a day. If your skin feels irritated at any point, stop.
Can you sleep in an under-eye mask?
No. Take it off after 15 minutes. A hydrogel mask left on for hours dries out, can slip toward the eye and doesn't add anything. Ochsner Health describes under-eye patches as designed to be worn for 10 to 20 minutes. Use the mask as part of your wind-down, then go to bed.
More detail: How long should you leave under-eye masks on?
Purple at night, pink in the morning
For the morning, the Brightening & Depuffing mask (pink) has vitamin C, caffeine and Kakadu Plum for brighter, less puffy-looking eyes. The AM + PM Eye Ritual is one jar of each: 60 pairs for A$99, or A$1.65 a pair, with free shipping Australia-wide.
