Do under-eye masks help puffiness and dark circles?

Yes, for a fresher, brighter look. A cool hydrogel mask can help puffy, tired-looking eyes look more awake in a 15-minute morning routine. It works through cooling and hydration, plus ingredients like caffeine and vitamin C. The effect is temporary. A mask won't change puffiness that's always there, or the natural colour of your skin.

What helps puffy-looking eyes in the morning
- Something cool. A cool compress is one of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's tips for bags under the eyes. A chilled hydrogel mask is a cool compress you don't have to hold.
- Sleep, less salt and a slightly raised head. These help more than any product. Fluid can settle around the eyes overnight, especially after a short sleep or a salty dinner.
- Hydration. Well-hydrated skin under the eyes looks smoother and fresher.
- Ingredients for tired-looking eyes. Caffeine and vitamin C are two of the most common.
What's in our morning mask
The Brightening & Depuffing mask (pink) is made for mornings:
- Caffeine, one of the most widely used actives in cosmetics, for tired, puffy-looking eyes. A review in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology covers how it's used in skin products (Herman & Herman, 2013).
- Vitamin C (3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid), a stable form, for a brighter-looking under-eye.
- Kakadu Plum (Terminalia Ferdinandiana), an Australian native fruit and one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C (Bobasa et al., 2024).
- Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and allantoin for hydration and comfort.
It's fragrance-free, vegan and cruelty-free, with 30 pairs in a jar for A$55.
A 15-minute morning routine
- Keep the jar in the fridge if you like (optional).
- On clean, dry skin, place one mask under each eye, below the lower lashes.
- Leave on for 15 minutes. Make breakfast or have a coffee.
- Peel off and pat in the leftover essence.
- Moisturiser, sunscreen and makeup.
More detail: How long should you leave under-eye masks on?
What a mask can't do
- It won't make puffiness disappear for good. Ochsner Health describes under-eye patches as a quick fix, "not a permanent solution".
- It won't change your natural colouring or face shape. Some under-eye fullness or shadow is simply how a face is built.
- It won't stand in for sleep.
- If swelling is sudden, painful, itchy, or only around one eye, see your GP or pharmacist rather than reaching for a mask.

Frequently asked questions
Do under-eye masks help puffiness?
They can help eyes look less puffy and more awake for the day, especially when they're cool. The effect is temporary and won't change puffiness that's always there.
Do under-eye masks help dark circles?
They can help the under-eye area look brighter and fresher through hydration and ingredients like vitamin C. They don't change your natural colouring, so think "brighter-looking", not "gone".
How long do I leave an under-eye mask on?
15 minutes for Kenzina masks. Most brands say 10–20 minutes. Don't sleep in them.
Why are my eyes puffier in the morning?
Fluid can settle around the eyes overnight, especially after a short sleep, a salty dinner or a drink. Sleep, less salt at night and raising your head slightly can all help. If the puffiness is sudden, painful or one-sided, check with your GP.
Should I keep under-eye masks in the fridge?
It's optional. A cool mask feels more refreshing, and cooling is a common tip for puffy-looking eyes. Don't freeze them.
Is the Brightening & Depuffing mask fragrance-free?
Yes. There's no fragrance in its ingredients.
