Under-Eye Masks for Dark Circles: What They Can and Can't Do
Under-eye masks can't remove dark circles, but they can help the under-eye area look brighter, fresher and less puffy. If your dark circles come from tiredness, dryness or puffiness, a cooling mask with vitamin C, caffeine and hyaluronic acid is a quick morning step: 15 minutes, then pat in the leftover essence. If they're mostly your natural colouring or the shape of your face, a mask won't change that, so think brighter-looking, not gone.
The short version
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do under-eye masks get rid of dark circles? | No. They can help eyes look brighter and less puffy, which is often what people notice first. |
| What to look for | A stable form of vitamin C, caffeine and hyaluronic acid. Kakadu Plum is an Australian fruit naturally rich in vitamin C. |
| How long to wear them | 15 minutes, on clean skin. |
| When | Mornings suit a brightening mask. Keep the jar in the fridge for an extra-cool start. |
| When to see a doctor | If one side is darker or swollen, or the area is painful, itchy or red. |
Why do dark circles happen?
Dark circles usually have more than one cause, which is why no single product fixes them.
- Natural colouring and family history. Dark circles are often inherited, and some skin tones have more pigment around the eyes.
- Thin skin. The skin under the eyes is thin, so the blood vessels beneath can show through. It tends to be more noticeable with age.
- Shadows from puffiness. Puffy lids can cast a shadow that looks like a dark circle. The American Academy of Ophthalmology treats this as different from true dark circles.
- Tiredness, dryness and the sun. Little sleep, dehydration, allergies and sun exposure can all make the area look duller or darker.
What an under-eye mask can and can't do
It can:
- Hydrate. A hydrogel mask holds water-based essence (for us, hyaluronic acid and glycerin) against the skin, so a dry, tired-looking area looks fresher.
- Cool. A cool mask feels refreshing, and a cool compress is one of the tips the American Academy of Ophthalmology lists for puffy eyes.
- Add a brightening ingredient. Vitamin C is a popular choice for a brighter-looking under-eye.
It can't: change the pigment you were born with, fill a hollow under the eye, or stand in for sleep and sunscreen. If your dark circles appeared suddenly, are on one side only, or come with swelling or itching, see your doctor.
What to look for in an under-eye mask
- Vitamin C in a stable form. Plain vitamin C breaks down quickly. Look for a stable form such as 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid.
- Caffeine. A classic in eye products for tired, puffy-looking eyes.
- Hyaluronic acid and glycerin. The hydration that makes the rest look better.
- Fragrance-free. A sensible choice around the eyes.
- A fair price per pair. A 30-pair jar costs much less per use than single sachets, which matters if you want to use them often.

How to use an under-eye mask for dark circles
- Start with clean, dry skin. Leave serums and eye cream until afterwards.
- Keep the jar in the fridge if you like. It's optional, but a cool mask feels even better first thing.
- Place one mask under each eye, smooth side down, just below your lower lashes and not touching the eye itself.
- Leave it on for 15 minutes. Have your coffee or check your emails.
- Peel off and pat in the leftover essence. No need to rinse. Then moisturiser and sunscreen.
For external use only. Do a patch test first, and stop using them if irritation occurs.
Simple habits that help too
- Wear sunscreen every day. Sun exposure can make the skin around the eyes look darker.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised if you wake up puffy.
- Go easy on alcohol and salty food the night before a big day.
- Be gentle. Pat products in rather than rubbing.
Frequently asked questions
Do under-eye masks get rid of dark circles?
No. They can help the under-eye area look brighter, fresher and less puffy, especially when tiredness, dryness or puffiness is part of the picture. They don't change your natural colouring or fill in hollows.
What is the best ingredient in an eye mask for dark circles?
Look for a stable form of vitamin C, caffeine and hyaluronic acid. Kakadu Plum, an Australian fruit naturally rich in vitamin C, is a bonus. Our morning mask has all of these.
How long should you leave under-eye masks on?
15 minutes for Kenzina masks, on clean skin. Then peel them off and pat the leftover essence in.
Should I use under-eye masks in the morning or at night?
Either works. A brightening mask like our pink Brightening & Depuffing suits the morning, when eyes tend to look puffy, and the purple Age Defying Collagen Boost suits the evening.
Can I use under-eye masks every day?
Yes, you can make them part of a daily routine. If your skin ever feels irritated, stop and let it settle.
Are Kenzina eye masks vegan?
Yes. Kenzina masks are vegan, and our collagen is vegan collagen made by yeast fermentation.
